A mission-driven financial institution
Founded in 2017, Clean Energy Credit Union was built with a bold vision: to make clean energy accessible and affordable for everyone. Unlike traditional banks, the not-for-profit credit union reinvests earnings back into its members and communities, rather than shareholders.
In just eight years, Clean Energy CU has financed more than 14,000 clean energy loans, totaling over $261 million for projects such as rooftop solar, electric vehicles, and energy-efficient home improvements. Collectively, these loans have helped offset an estimated 1.1 million tons of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to what more than 1.4 million acres of U.S. forests absorb in a single year.
“Becoming a Certified B Corporation™ is not just a milestone for us, it’s a natural next step in our journey,” said Terri Mickelsen, CEO of Clean Energy Credit Union. “Our members trust us to ensure their money makes a difference. This certification reaffirms that commitment and demonstrates that financial institutions can and should lead with values, purpose, and transparency.”
Joining a global movement
B Corp certification assesses the entirety of a business’ operations and impact to all stakeholders, including workers, customers, communities, and the environment. . The process is rigorous and requires companies to provide evidence of responsible practices across energy use, worker policies, diversity and inclusion, and accountability.
Clean Energy CU now joins a global community of over 10,000 certified B Corps across 103 countries and 160 industries, including Patagonia, The Guardian, Ben & Jerry’s, and Seventh Generation.
“We are proud to welcome Clean Energy Credit Union into the B Corp community,” said Max Hayes, Growth Manager, B Lab U.S. & Canada. “This certification reinforces their dedication to providing meaningful climate solutions that will secure the health of people and our home planet for future generations.”
Looking forward
Clean Energy Credit Union views certification as the beginning, not the end. This marks a long term commitment that Clean Energy CU will work to improve its B Impact Score, ensuring its progress continues alongside its growing membership.
“Our members are at the heart of everything we do,” Mickelsen added. “By banking with us, they’re helping accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and toward a cleaner, more resilient future. Together, we’re proving that small, everyday financial choices can create a lasting impact.”
